A sweet story.ĥ.0 out of 5 stars great book.but i love the movie way better Reviewed in the United States □□ on December 27, 2014 The story is quite different, but I will say no more so I won’t spoil the ending. Please note- this book is not the same as the movie of the same name. I had read the book before, enjoyed it very much, and wished to share it. I bought this charming tale as a gift for a student who had broken her arm right before summer vacation. This book is perfect for young readers or for older nostalgic ones.ĥ.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Mermaid Tale Reviewed in the United States □□ on August 29, 2015 As usual with Hoffman’s writing, you can feel the intricate bonds between the two friends and the angst of young love. It took me only an hour to read but it brought back memories os childhood and friendship. I am used to her more adult novels so this one was a pleasant surprise. She’s also impulsive, easily entertained, and absolutely unapologetic about the fact that she loves to read and write smut. A USA Today bestselling author of more than twenty titles, A New York Times, #1 Wall Street A New York Times, #1 Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty novels, Meghan March has been known to wear camo face paint and tromp around in woods wearing mud-covered boots, all while sporting a perfect manicure. He highlights laws like the Morrill Act of 1862, which was supposed to provide grants of land to states to finance the establishment of colleges specializing in “agriculture and the mechanical arts.” But state lawmakers misused or did not apply it to Black colleges. The years of federal neglect led Harris to conclude that HBCUs are owed reparations from the overall bias they have suffered. That fundamental question Harris pondered for a decade became the impetus for his newly released book, “The State Must Provide: Why America’s Colleges Have Always Been Unequal-and How to Set Them Right.” A reporter for The Atlantic, Harris crafted a comprehensive work that examines the vast history of how racial discrimination against historically Black colleges and universities manifested itself in governmental underfunding and undermining that augmented many of the schools’ lifelong struggles. Why were the facilities superior at the predominately white school founded in 1950 than the historically Black university founded 75 years earlier, in 1875? Those differences sparked a question: Why? Having enjoyed everything I’ve read of hers, I felt confident she was going to knock it out of the park, but my experience with the genre is admittedly limited. Review: When I saw that Josh Lanyon had started a cozy mystery series, I was both intrigued and excited. And once Police Chief Carson learns Trevor was killed with the cutlass hanging over the door of Ellery’s bookstore, it is. However, the bookstore is failing, the mansion is falling down, and there’s that little drawback of finding rival bookseller–and head of the unwelcoming-committee–Trevor Maples dead during the annual Buccaneer Days celebration. Sure enough, the village is charming, its residents amusingly eccentric, and widowed police chief Jack Carson is decidedly yummy (though probably as straight as he is stern). So when he learns he’s inherited both a failing bookstore and a falling-down mansion in the quaint seaside village of Pirate’s Cove on Buck Island, Rhode Island, it’s full steam ahead! Go check it out!īlurb: Ellery Page, aspiring screenwriter, Scrabble champion and guy-with-worst-luck-in-the-world-when-it-comes-to-dating, is ready to make a change. At a Glance: I can’t wait to visit Pirate’s Cove again and get to know the characters better-especially Jack, and Ellery’s employee Nora, who is completely fabulous-and, of course, see what other messes Ellery gets himself into. The line cuts into his hands and his back. He bears the weight of the fish as it pulls his skiff along. Once he gets to sea his suffering only increases. It’s seen through his small shack, the bed he sleeps on, his lack of food, and in the eyes of the other fishermen. He suffers without complaint in his poverty. It’s clear through context clues, as well as Manolin’s desire to care for the old man, that Santiago is very poor. The majority of the novel, whether Santiago is onshore or at sea, is punctuated by struggle. Of the variety of themes to be found in The Old Man and the Sea hardship and the perseverance needed to surmount those hardships is one of the most prominent. The Old Man and the Sea Themes Hardship and Perseverance Within the novella, a reader will come across complex themes of strength and perseverance, as well as symbols of perfection and age which are all addressed directly. Hemingway’s unique style of writing is exemplified through short, concise sentences and a factual approach to the events he portrays. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Star Dog by A.M. LightnerIt’s not that Side Show is bad… well, maybe that’s the wrong way of putting it. I’m lucky this week– Side Show is another one of those films where I can point you to a 2-minute YouTube video and recommend that over the full 64-minute movie. I’ll never forget the night I had to wear a beard!” Outside of the fat woman and the living skeleton, I’ve played everyone’s part in this show.

In Essential Labor, Garbes explores assumptions about care, work, and deservedness, offering a deeply personal and rigorously reported look at what mothering is, and can be. In response to the increasing weight placed on mothers and caregivers-and the lack of a social safety net to support them-writer Angela Garbes found herself pondering a vital question: How, under our current circumstances that leave us lonely, exhausted, and financially strained, might we demand more from American family life? The Covid-19 pandemic shed fresh light on a long-overlooked truth: mothering is among the only essential work humans do. From the acclaimed author of Like a Mother comes a reflection on the state of caregiving in America, and an exploration of mothering as a means of social change. |
